We have had several computers that were recently reloaded that had the Symantec Antivirus LiveUpdate grayed out or locked out. Although we have not figured out why this happened, we did figure out a way to fix the problem.

LiveUpdate Locked-Can’t Update Symantec Antivirus

Click Start then Run. Type regedit and then find this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intel\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\PatternManager.

Right click on LockUpdatePattern and select Modify.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intel\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\PatternManager

Change value from a 1 to a 0.

Close the Registry Editor and open Symantec Antivirus. The LiveUpdate should be unlocked now. You may need to reboot your system in order to run LiveUpdate.

My LockUpdatePattern was already zero and I still cannot update Symantec. As well as that issue, I cannot update windows, Malware/Spyware products, and some other websites are just completely not opening. I had a virus/trojen that almost ate my system, but carefully piecing the machine back together over the last few days has at least kept it running. Used many symantec burnt removal tools on a disc, and still after I “mostly” removed these numerously growing viruses and trojens (say that cause I can’t update), the system is still just not right. Dell Inspiron 1150, yes and oldly but previous steady laptop system is now on the ropes. Worked a bit in my msconfig and regedit to re-select the proper programs/functions running – still not right. I’m at wits end. It seems I still have some sort of virus and its eating away at my system, but just not as visable to the present updated sofware. Need to update somehow. HELP?!

    Spring,

If this was my computer, I would back up my data then reload the system. Complete re-install of your operating system. Sometimes this is an easier option than trying to remove an infection.

    Good luck.

It may a good idea thanks, I will try it afterwards. I just add my idea as:
I have almost of computers at my workplace; the symantec liveupdate button gray out or locked. But I recognize that if I log onto that PC with administrator account or admin group account, I can update as usual, the liveupdate button is not gray out. But if I log as guest account or standard user account, I can not update, the liveupdate account grayed out. Why?

  17. S Says:

Thank you! Worked like a charm.

Does anyone know what the implications of this actions are? Am usually paranoid changing something in the registry but don’t have a clue when I’m doing it. :)

This is a great trick for XP but I have a Vista machine and don’t see that key. Any ideas?

This worked! I was getting so frustrated about it.

I’m also interested in the implications of this change.
